MARIAN ICHASO LEFELD b. Caracas, Venezuela, 1970.
Being surrounded by art, for most of my life, it was only when I moved to Dallas from Caracas that I was able to find the opportunity and environment to experiment with a visual language. A force bigger than myself drives me, and my work shows great impetus. I work in series, which facilitates the exploration of the subject at different levels. The beauty of art is that, when engaging, the subject is never exhausted. There is always a remainder, a surplus that can be carried over into a new image like the mathematician who’s seeking for the last equation, to the simplest of forms. My subjects are sometimes ordinary. They are not however emotionally neutral. They are, in fact, charged with primal emotions, which leads to a portrayal of simple yet complex human beings // a reflection of our ambivalent nature. The people that surround me, both transcendentally and practically, inspire me. Ultimately however, I’m inspired by the most basic relationship a human can have // that which I have with my own self: getting to know myself, my reactions to life and people, my judgments, beliefs, feelings of love and hatred, hope and hopelessness, spirituality, cynicism, and the constant effort to find some balance between them.
