AUDREY JOHNSON

At age 18, I left Ft. Worth, Texas to enroll in Washington University in St. Louis for my BFA degree. It was there I was introduced to Abstract Expressionism and it made a lasting impression on me.

There were many other art movements and artists that inspired me, too many to list, but I would like to pay special tribute to Paul Klee who proved that a sense of humor can be added to good art, Henri Matisse for his color and inventive shapes and Stuart Davis who could turn an ordinary scene into a maze of adventures.

My art work does not reflect the real world; although, most of the items are mundane and recognizable. Paintings have a habit of taking on lives of their own. I am always experimenting with shapes, composition and different mediums.

People ask me why I paint so many cats. They are the only live models in my studio.

Welcome to my world. I hope these paintings give the viewers the same sense of excitement and imaginative thinking I hoped to achieve.
