Virginia Marum
“With a working style contrary to the Plein Air artist, my final piece succeeds in embodying the mood and realism of the landscape. With a direct window into my thoughts, there is an intimacy, and with my thoughts comes other images and text, like memory, that interlaces the landscape. These images are my diary of the landscape. The mood of my pieces are often inspired by the moment that I am recalling but created by the media at hand. I use old artist’s proofs from etchings, previous paintings, and sometimes written journal entries as the backdrop for my pieces. Then I fill in the space with whatever materials I have available.” Virginia Marum holds a B.A. in Art History and a B.A. in Printmaking from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She has worked as a design and color consultant for over 5 years as well as worked in the Interior Design field. She also taught Printmaking, Drawing, Bookmaking and Art History at the University of California. Marum carries a particular interest in the history of images and symbolism and wrote her award-receiving thesis entitled “Patriotic Flesh” on the World War Pin-Up and their role in death and patriotism. Most notably, Marum has worked alongside internationally known artist, Makiko Okamoto, in two shows and with Crown Point Press printer and author, Emily York. Marum worked as an apprentice to the master printer at Josephine Press and later as the director of the gallery Christopher John Gallery. She has also worked with notable printers and artists John Cage, Michael McMillian, and Raymond Pettibon. Her work has shown in numerous individual and group exhibitions throughout LA as well as published in Sunset Magazine for a design issue. She has had the fortunate pleasure of living at sea and by the sea for over a decade with a recent return to Dallas, Texas.
