Christian Price Frazer
I have always known I was an artist.
Creating has always come very naturally to me. My creative energy is directed into my paintings. Painting, for me, is the act of putting whatever is on my mind onto canvas. It is the process of capturing an idea or vision that has embedded itself into my consciousness and using it to create a tangible piece of art. I am frequently drawn to paint the human form, birds, nests and abstract shapes. My creative process begins with an idea. From there I develop a sketch, move on to a paint/color study and finally to the canvas. Ideas come to me very quickly. To accommodate them, I work on several pieces concurrently. When an idea hits, I must get it started immediately to maintain the integrity of the image. Once this process begins, I work quite deliberately and consciously while employing traditional techniques combined with more innovative methods. My primary mediums include acrylic and oil, but often times the work require that I utilize additional mediums including pastels, charcoal, natural gemstones or ink. I custom mix my own colors, glazes, and textures - which are applied in many layers to accomplish the multi-dimensional effects my work requires. Many of my current new works implement a technique known as sgraffito. Sgraffito comes from the Italian word “sgraffire”, meaning to scratch. When utilizing sgraffito, the top layer of color is scratched to reveal the color beneath. Or, as in my new works, the words beneath. In this body of work, the sgraffito reveals a series of prayers and wishes. While the majority of the words are purposely illegible, my overall goal is to infuse each painting with a spiritual energy. It is a goal I hope you agree I have accomplished.I am truly grateful for the opportunity to create art. People often ask me how I come up with all of my ideas. The truth is - generating ideas has never been a problem for me. The dilemma for me derives from having too many.
