Suzanne Truman

I am interested in perception and the quick formation of visual information in the brain before the viewer is entirely conscious of it. This work explores perception and passage of time. The ephemeral imprint of light and visual sensation recorded with layers of line and color in these works are also a response to being immersed in a moment-in-time rather than being overwhelmed by digital overload

Click on an image below then hover over the bottom of it to view its description.

The EXPANSE series are both examples of my interest time, precept and subconscious of the moment. These series of sixteen paintings on boxes are displayed in a grid with precise spacing between each panel. This allows the mind to subconsciously fill in the space, while also creating an array of cast shadows. Before the multitude of translucent encaustic layers were complete, I carved 1/8” deep grooves into the wax, then filled the channels with clear tones of translucent blue-green. Finished, the surface appears to oscillate and gives the series a sense of movement. Yet upon closer examination, the surface is actually silky smooth. I hope to compel the viewer into standing long enough before the series that a subtle feeling of physical movement – like swaying on water - incurs. The emotional aspect is meant to convey a passage of time and its transitory nature.

While painting, I use elements of an additive and subtractive process in a harmonious way to evoke metaphorical aspects of time and the phenomenal effects of seeing. As the surface evolves, I scribe, scrape and sand back into the painted strata. By intuitively responding to emerging imagery, my intent is to distill essences that cannot be explicitly represented. In turn, I hope these work stirs internal dialog with viewers, and inspires their own sense of perceptual and conceptual exploration and contemplation.
